Background

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) is a 2,700-acre nature preserve dedicated to the conservation and restoration of native ecosystems, environmental education, and outdoor recreation. Managed collaboratively by the City of Lewisville, the University of North Texas (UNT), and the Lewisville Independent School District (LISD), LLELA is leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), ensuring its long-term protection and stewardship.

LLELA provides a vital kayak entry point to the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, which connects to the Trinity River National Water Trail—a designated waterway offering over 130 miles of paddling opportunities through diverse natural landscapes. This trail is part of a larger network that promotes outdoor recreation, wildlife observation, and environmental education across North Texas. The kayak launch at LLELA is a key access point for residents and visitors looking to explore this trail, participate in guided paddling programs, and experience the natural beauty of Lewisville's waterways.

This project aligns with the Lewisville 2025 vision and the Green Centerpiece Big Move, reinforcing the city's commitment to sustainability, outdoor recreation, and environmental education.
