The Healthy Infrastructure Plan (HIP) identified three corridors for increasing trails to connect residents and visitors to parks, school, alternative transportation infrastructure, etc. These trails will utilize utility corridors, on-street bike paths, shared use paths adjacent to streets and creek areas. The objective of a corridor through Castle Hills will be connections to the robust trails in adjacent communities such as Carrollton, Plano, and The Colony, as well as to the majority of Lewisville including the Green Centerpiece. The Castle Hills Corridor Trail Phase I was included in the bond package for parks and trails approved by voters in 2024.

 

The City of Lewisville selected McAdams to provide surveying and landscape architecture services to prepare a schematic design for the trial. The design will be based on guidelines as set forth in the HIP, 2024 bond election proposed projects document, and Parks and Recreation trail design standards. The site of the proposed improvements is Phase I of the Castle Hills Trail Development for the southernmost portion of the corridor running from Windhaven Parkway east to the utility easement, then north along the easement to the sports fields. The project will include a 12’ wide trail, wayfinding signage, trailhead(s), park furniture and shade, where possible.

Project Status: Under Construction

The development of the Centennial Creek Hike and Bike Trail Extension is part of an overall vision to create a community that provides residents with accessibility to our parks, trails and open space preserves within a 10-minute walk of their front door. The trail will connect with the existing Timber Creek Trail, which runs from the westmost boundary of Lewisville to Central Park. This segment of trail being constructed runs east along Timber Creek to Corporate Drive.  It is identified as a priority segment of the planned trail system and is a key component to meeting goals established in the Lewisville 2025 Big Move - Extending the Green and the Healthy Infrastructure Plan. The City retained the services of TBG Partners to design and provide project oversight for the project. The scope includes a 12’ wide concrete hike and bike trail with pedestrian bridges and low water crossings following the Timber Creek Greenbelt. There will also be trailhead access points along the trail that will include seating, bike racks, trash/recycling receptacles, wayfinding and environmental graphics. The trail will weave through the existing dense riparian corridor with special attention to preserving trees and existing topography where possible. The Trail will also include public art.

Project Status: In Design

The development of the DCLID Trail system is part of an overall vision to ensure every Lewisville citizen is within a 10-minute walk (10 MWP) to a quality park. Phase 1 of the DCLID Trail Development will focus on the westernmost portion of the planned trail system – connecting Rockbrook Elementary School, churches, and businesses with nearby residents. With the passing of Bond 2024, the City prepared to pursue engineering and design services to initiate this project. It was determined that Halff Associates, Inc., was the appropriate organization to spearhead this effort in light of their development of the DCLID Trail Master Plan and familiarity with the Levee District area as well as the role in the development of the Healthy Infrastructure Plan.

 

The DLCID project will include a mixed-used hike and bike trail, benches, pedestrian lighting, trees, pause points and a possible pedestrian bridge. This project will be a key component to meeting the goals established in the Lewisville 2025 Big Move – Extending the Green and the Healthy Infrastructure Plan (HIP). This project will also include public art. 

In 2018 the city entered into an interlocal agreement with the NCTCOG to create design document for the DCTA trail connectors. Halff Associates was retained by NCTCOG for the design and was completed in Fall 2020. In July 2022, the City of Lewisville entered into an agreement with Halff to provide Survey, Geotechnical, Civil, Landscape Architecture and Structural services for the DCTA Trail Connection Segment.
