The City of Lewisville has joined the Trust for Public Land’s 10-Minute Walk to a Park movement, working to ensure that every resident has safe, convenient access to quality parks and green spaces within a 10-minute walk from their home.

As part of this commitment, the Urban Land Institute (ULI) partnered with Lewisville to explore innovative solutions for addressing gaps in park access. One key recommendation was the creation of a mobile recreation program to serve underserved areas. From this vision, Play Lewisville on Wheels was born.

Built on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to PLAY and experience the benefits of parks and recreation, this initiative brings that promise to life, delivering fun, connection, and active living directly to the heart of the community.

Play Lewisville on Wheels

Play Lewisville on Wheels is an innovative mobile recreation program that brings play, recreation, and community engagement directly to neighborhoods with limited access to traditional parks and recreational facilities. This program ensures that all residents, regardless of their location or means, can enjoy the benefits of physical activity, social connection, and the great outdoors.

In addition to reaching underserved areas, the program also activates existing parks within the Lewisville park system, creating opportunities for socialization, interaction, and community building. Whether through games, activities, or simply providing a welcoming space to gather, Play Lewisville on Wheels delivers fun, equity, and accessibility to everyone in Lewisville.

The program has garnered national recognition for its impact and innovation. It was featured in the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Magazine in an article titled "Mobile Recreation for Fun, Health, and Wellness" and highlighted in an NRPA blog, "From Plans to Parks: Learning from Lewisville". These accolades reflect the dedication and hard work of the team behind this transformative initiative.

Nature on Wheels

Nature on Wheels, overseen by our LLELA team, is a unique and impactful mobile program that brings nature-based experiences and environmental education directly to the neighborhoods of Lewisville. This innovative initiative ensures that residents, regardless of their proximity to natural spaces, can connect with nature, learn about the environment, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.

As part of the City of Lewisville's commitment to sustainability and the 10-Minute Walk to a Park movement, Nature on Wheels focuses on creating opportunities for hands-on learning and discovery. The program engages participants of all ages through activities like wildlife observation, interactive science demonstrations, environmental workshops, and educational games. It also provides access to tools and materials, such as microscopes, plant samples, and field guides, fostering curiosity and understanding of the natural world.

In addition to reaching underserved areas, Nature on Wheels activates parks and public spaces throughout Lewisville by offering nature-based programming that complements the city’s existing recreational and educational opportunities. By delivering these resources directly to the community, NOW encourages environmental stewardship and cultivates a deeper connection to the natural environment.

Nature on Wheels has been celebrated for its innovative approach to environmental education and its ability to make nature accessible to everyone. Whether inspiring the next generation of conservationists or offering moments of wonder and exploration to families, NOW is transforming how Lewisville residents experience and interact with the outdoors.

Whales on Wheels

The Whales on Wheels program is a vital extension of the Play Lewisville on Wheels initiative, designed to bring critical water safety information and lessons directly to the community. This innovative program not only educates residents about water safety on land but also provides lifesaving swim lessons at apartment communities with access to swimming pools.

Water safety is a matter of life and death. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 5–14. These staggering statistics underscore the importance of water safety education, especially in communities where access to formal swim lessons may be limited.

Whales on Wheels aims to bridge this gap through hands-on, accessible, and engaging education. The program empowers children and families with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent water-related accidents and respond effectively in emergencies. Whether teaching safety practices around water or lifesaving swimming techniques, Whales on Wheels is making a difference—one lesson at a time.

Through this initiative, we are committed to saving lives by equipping our community with the tools and knowledge to stay safe in and around water. Together, we can reduce drowning incidents and create a safer, more informed community
